Coming Soon... well not really...

Take a group of Local and International filmmakers, and give them this challenge - "Create a Trailer for a movie that doesn't, and never will exist". The results of that challenge were shown this past Friday, June 24th at the "Fake Trailers, Reel Festival" held at the Mayfair Theatre.

The Trailers ranged from Comedies, to Action Movies, from Grindhouse Exploitation films to, of course, Horror. Two excellent standouts were "Movie Title" - a wonderfully "meta" take on every Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt type drama trailer, and "The McNetwork" - a ridiculously well done riff on the "Social Network" with the tagline "You don't serve 99 billion burgers... without making a few enemies". And the girls of the Rideau Valley Roller Girls were featured in not one but two trailers ("Skate to the Box", and "Overkill") .

The Horror/Suspense realm probably had the most entries. Highlight included "Demonitron" and "Don't Go in the Basment", which gave us 60's camp psychedelia. "Jack the Gripper" gave us a great spoof on the slasher genre set on ... a set, while "The Lost Calls" gave us a well produced trailer for a "Blair Witch" style flick. And, because it's Ottawa, "Walking Dead Tales" waved the Zombie flag in all it's glory.

No word yet on whether a compilation DVD will be released, but for those who did miss it, we've got a few entries you can watch.

Nightface - Meet the Author

We're very happy to announce that our very own typicallydia will be having a book signing of her first novel "Nightface", July 16th at Collected Works. Come meet the author, chat, and get your book signed.

What? You don't HAVE a copy yet. Well that's ok - you can get one  online at Amazon, or from the publisher Post Mortem Press. Or if you prefer the good ol' brick and mortar route, you can buy them at Agora Bookstore and the above mentioned Collected Works right here it OT.

Don't have any money to buy it? Well that's ok too... we'll be giving away copies right here on the site starting in early July.

Make a Movie (or at least a few frames of one...)

OK, this isn't Ottawa it's T.O. and points north - but hey, this isn't hockey and we can be friends right? Besides it's for horror's sake...

Full Plate Productions out of Toronto is making a film called "A Little Bit Zombie" and he's crowdsourcing the funding... Kinda like IndieGoGo, but more direct. For $10.00 you can buy "frames" and become a producer of the Movie. Check out his site at My Million Dollar Movie. You can elect to get your investment back if the film makes money, or have your profits donated to the environmental charity of your choice.

There are only 400 odd spots left, so act fast!

UPDATE: Spartan Youth Radio has been on the scene. Check it out here.

A little summertime gloom at the Orange

Entitled 'Cats, Rats & Ravens', this show runs to June 12. A perfect weekend adventure for sure! There are a few pieces I would like to flank the living-room entrance, let alone mounted at cat-height for all to enjoy.

She uses a basic and classic palette with hues that hearken to Renaissance masters. Recall every child's famous trick? The timeless piece 'Black Cat in a Dark Room at Night' - this is a study in the reality of those night species, with the noted exception of bats. Crows caught with their personality on display and the peering eyes of rodents held suspended in their familiar shapes.  And cats. Who is not leery of the magical black cat.

For admirers of a true art that is uncluttered by modernity, I do recommend the Best.

If all this sun has got you down, never fear! The Orange Gallery is nearby and full of gloom for the next little bit. Not to make the show sound dreary, quite the opposite, it is a wonderful display of artist Gwendolyn Best's fine work.
