Good news, my fellow horror fiends! There’s a new film festival coming to town…
Let me begin with a question I received when I announced to a close friend that I was taking on the enormous task of organizing a film festival:
“Have you ever been to a film festival?”
Honestly, what answer was she really expecting?
In the split second before I replied (“Yes, of course. Several.”), it became abundantly clear that this wasn’t the only bout of skepticism I was going to face as Festival Coordinator for the inaugural season of the Cellar Door Film Festival (CDFF). But it’s happening.
The idea for CDFF spawned from the dregs of a meager horror/sci-f-/fantasy cinema club of the same name which, having lost its latest venue (a local bookstore having suffered the fate of countless independents), needed new life.
I've heard some pained moans and grumblings about the doomed fate of previous attempts at similar festivals in Ottawa. But with a growing film production scene and industry presence, not one but *two*coveted repertoire cinemas, and a thriving interest in the speculative genre (Haunted Walks, Inc., Ottawa Horror, the Zombie walk), and all things ‘geek’ (Ottawa ComicCon, Ottawa Geek Market), we know this much: there is certainly an audience.
Fortunately, this fledgling festival has found enthusiasm and support in a number of like-minded friends whose backgrounds (Film Studies, Communications) and active investments in the local arts are going to be invaluable over the next year.
And so, I present to you, the team behind the Cellar Door:
