What's New?

This week we have a round up of events and movies around the OT that Horror Fans may find interesting. MAYFAIR THEATRE Tonight at 8:45 you can catch the last showing of "Hereditary". This film has been garnering a lot of attention lately, both positive and negative, so be sure to check it out. August 15th is the Ottawa Premiere of "The Crescent". This indie horror/mystery has been racking up awards at festivals across the country. I know very little about it, but the trailer looks intriguing. And on August 20 and 21st don't miss a big screen viewing of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with the amazing Gray Oldman in the title role. If you haven't seen this on the big screen, do yourself a favour and go. You can find all these and more on The Mayfair website . Shudder Canada Launches! A talk with Colin Geddes and Sam Zimmerman

There may be a fine line between 'early adopter' and 'creepy stalker' and I fit somewhere in the middle. Having followed the first launch of this service in the US last year from 'Shudder is coming!' to 'Shudder is here!', then being very impressed with the offering, I was first in line when news of the Canadian and UK launch this fall. Well, it is here. After a little bit of hush-hush data gathering and no doubt a whole lot of really hard work getting this 'screaming' service off the ground--It's Here. Having a chance to chat with the team leads Sam Zimmerman and Colin Geddes was a real trick or treat. The trick was not just talking titles! I know they are both huge horror fans, as am I, but there were a whack of real questions I was burning like a jack-o-lantern to ask. Necromentia as industrial strength horror, or vice-versa: Encephalon

Necromentia is horror-lovers horror. Regardless, after reading so many mixed reviews, I put it low on the watch-list and until recently, it was not even on my radar. What had me tune in was being told by an Ottawa songwriter that I have listened to for a number of years that his band is featured on the soundtrack. 5am, m@ and Alis Meet Encephalon . m@ (Matt Gifford), 5AM (Sam Mainer), and most recent member Alis Alias (Alison Keller). They have gained attention in fits and bursts since 2005. Tracks featured on high caliber compilations, EPs, and a long-term presence on the web, had sparked a following of ardent fans worldwide, club-centric and otherwise. I adore industrial and electronic music and often think entire films could be wrapped around a song, let alone a bands repertoire.
