Red Death and Aftermath... and more Woman in Black passes!

With the whole town in an "All-Star" dizzy, what's a horror fan who's NOT into hockey supposed to do?

Well, the good folks at the Ottawa Goth Syndicate have a great idea - The Red Death Masquerade and The Aftermath.

The Masquerade starts tonight at 9PM at the Kent St. Legion 330 Kent St. Great DJ's, Rue Morgue's Liisa Ladouceur, and a costume contest are all part of the night. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. All the details can be found at the OGS site. Tickets to the Masquerade ALSO include entry to... The Aftermath.

The Aftermath takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at the same location at 1PM, and includes vendors and exhibitors in a wide variety of dark styles, and products. If you've been following Ottawa Horror, then you know that we've got a table there, so drop by.

Didn't go to the Masquerade? Entry to The Aftermath is a measly $2.00 - well worth it.

Need more encouragement? Well how about this... Alliance Films has given us ANOTHER 5 double passes to the Woman in Black to give away at the Aftermath. Anyone who stops by the OH booth and fills out a ballot will be entered into a draw to win a prize pack including the double pass, an Ottawa Horror DVD and an Ottawa Horror T-Shirt.

See you there!

Win tickets to "The Woman in Black"

Well the title pretty much says it all doesn't it?

The good folks at Alliance Films, were once again kind enough to give us 5 double passes to the advance preview of "The Woman in Black" on February 1st at the Coliseum here in Ottawa.

If you haven't already read the previews of this eagerly anticipated film:

"In this supernatural thriller, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a widowed lawyer whose grief has put his career in jeopardy, is sent to a remote village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric.  But upon his arrival, it soon becomes clear that everyone in the town is keeping a deadly secret.  Although the townspeople try to keep Kipps from learning their tragic history, he soon discovers that the house belonging to his client is haunted by the ghost of a woman who is determined to find someone and something she lost…and no one, not even the children, are safe from her vengeance."

As always we'll keep it simple. First five people to email us at contests@ottawahorror.com with the answer to the following "skill testing" question (and we use that term loosely) will win.

"What other role is star Daniel Radcliffe famous for?"

(No, it's not a trick question, it really is that easy).

Thanks once again to Amy and the good folks at Alliance for helping us put all this together.

Horror in Popcorn Form

There is a great new app out there for iPhones and Androids (appropriately launched on Halloween) called Popcorn Horror! Even if you don’t have a smart phone you can visit their website www.popcornhorror.com and take a look at how to get YOUR own films onto the app.

Popcorn Horror is an app designed to bring you the latest and greatest short horror films from around the globe. The concept is great for the fan and the artist – they pay the filmmakers $200 to licence the film and give them a percentage of the funds raised from downloads. For the fan, the app and streaming is free (you can upgrade to a premium pass to download the content and support the filmmakers for only $1-2 a month if you choose to). The films are formatted to fit your phone using a program that recognizes what phone you have and optimizes the streaming settings and images for your screen. It uses the lowest amount of bandwidth while producing the best viewing experience to ensure the films won't bust your download limits. The goal of the app makers is not to get rich, but to bring great short films to the world. Any money raised goes right back to buying more films.

The project got off the ground with a Scottish Innovation Fund grant and it is gaining ground fast. Though the founder is a filmmaker himself, the app contains none of his films because “there are so many filmmakers out there making better films than me and the app is not a platform for self promotion, the app is a work of passion". Popcorn Horror is building its library with a new film each week, the backgrounds are stills from the films, and they will be adding features as the app gains popularity. The designers would love suggestions from the fans. So get in on this app from the beginning and don’t miss the great films coming out each week. (They also have poster and quote sections so even if your film isn't on the app, your poster can be.) All the content is user submitted so go ahead and send them your stuff to show the world and possibly make some money!

Popcorn horror strives to put out the best original films they can find, not rehash the same tired plots or put out low budget versions of Hollywood films and to give you different genres each week. They rely on word of mouth to spread the app to new users so tell your friends! This week another Canadian film: Nuit Blanche will be added.

Send in your own films, tell your friends and check out the films!

Beers, Fears, and Tunes!

On the Rue Morgue staff blog, I saw a wonderful entry about Ottawa's own Beau's All Natural Brewing Company. They had unleashed a theme set of two beer for the past Halloween season... or what I tend to think of as 'Every Day'. Sadly, we missed the truck which happens all to often with the fleeting nature of the macabre in this staid government town...

Thank you for the great image, Jordan!

Ottawa met Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at Beau's Oktoberfest event in Van Kleek Hill and one can only hope that this becomes an annual theme. As with any 'beer project' things change, so fingers crossed, ready your voodoo dolls, and we may see more of this. One can only hope that these spooky brews stick around!

Artwork on the bottles was designed by artist Dirty Donnie. Originally from Ottawa, you may have seen his renown work for Metallica, among other varied and wicked ventures. The original release came with awesome tunes including Ha Ha Holiday by local pop-punkers The White Wires. Be warned, it is listed as sold out at the moment, but you can get a taste of what you could have heard here...
