There is an Executive Producer on the loose! And it could be YOU!

I crossed paths last week with Ottawa director Dave Shaw. It was about a week after he tuned me onto his recent project, one that grabs a place in every horror lovers 15-year-old heart.

"From the depths of the jungle, to the heart of the city." Late Night Classics Presents GORILLA!

Parody meets homage in this 'beast on the loose' tale. It is defiantly perfect in black and white and just what we have been waiting for after one too many shaky-cam horrors and experimental comedy-thrillers.

It is straight up what-dunnit. The cast of characters is simple, owing to the premise of an escaped gorilla terrorizing townsfolk. This is one of the things that caught my attention in the trailers and other info on the official production website. The characters are soft-boiled, and exactly what comes to my mind when there is a gorilla terrorizing the city. Easy to digest. Easy to like. Shaw makes it look fun to be in, and fun to make. In fact, the production is inviting all to help out. Well, with funding. That is after all what makes movies move from concept to premiere. Shaw explains;

"If you go to someone and ask for $500 they are liable to say no. But, if you say $20 they are likely to say yes. So I set up a program where everyone who donates $20 or more gets on-screen executive producer credit. There are movies with loads of executive producers, and sometimes guys who didn't really do anything except provide start-up money. We decided it would be funny if we had 25 executive producers. 50 Executive producers! A hundred!" To become an executive producer you can email questions, or PayPal to dshaw900@gmail.com

Mainly Ottawa based, and filmed entirely within the Capitol, the final product will likely draw adoration in all respects.

Core crew consists of Shaw, as actor, producer and director. Julian Adderley is his production partner who also worked on Condensed Classics - more on that in a bit. Julieanne Cameron is their lovely cinematographer along with cameraman Steve Laflamme. I have been told that Jack of all trades, Stewart Grenzowski, is totally indispensible. He works on all aspects of the film from production to publicity.

Sara Duplancic and Francis Fisk head up the cast. Both recognizable to patrons of the Ottawa Little Theatre where Shaw works as Client Services Coordinator. Paul Washer, also in theatre, plays Officer Landis who chases the beast with little heed to evidence or facts. The only role that auditions were held for was that of Mimsy, played by Sherry Thurig. Brett Kelly fans will recall Thurig from The Bonesetter.

Of course, that leaves Dave Shaw himself. He plays Riggs Deardonthe only person who can help them track the beast. Of course, he is a Rat Pack obsessed and tiki bar soaked washed up TV host. Perfect. Just who I know I would turn to if my friends were being slaughtered by a rampaging zoo animal. If you are disappointed with the remake version of Fright Night's 'Peter Vincent', I have a feeling that this will have what we want in a washed up TV host set to save the day.

There is a mirror image in Dave Shaw who is bristling with energy, far from the washed up host he created in Gorilla!. He hosted a TV show at one time that you may have seen on Movieola. Considering the trend of remaking and interactive commenting on films, the 26 episodes of Condensed Classics with Dave Shaw are just as entertaining today and the kind of thing I wish was available outside of clips on youtube.

"It is fun, it is about fun. It's not about horror," said Shaw. "I really like these old horror movies, where the creature comes in and grabs the girl. Creature From The Black Lagoon kind of stuff, nothing you can take too seriously. I enjoy taking the 80's comedic sensibility and marrying it to this 50s horror movie. Landis, the Zucker brothers, the Airplane movies - that's the kind of tone we are going with."

Music will add an extra kick to the tone. A 20s style duo have melded a 50s tikibar-junglejazz-theremin feel to the film. Truthfully, we were at a loss on how to describe the sound, so I am as curious as you are.

Curiouser - IMDB lists a name for the Gorilla, but my sources elude to all not being what they seem. We may have to watch and see. Or, if you get in on the ground floor as executive producer, you may just get the inside scoop.

Sound Bite - Vampire

This is what I thrive on at Ottawa Horror - dredging floaters like this out of the nearest ditch. Those in the know, know I adore vampires that are one hundred percent killer without one flake of sparkle. Oddly, we saw PSOP 'management' at a recent event and he did not mention what Opi was up to these days... makes you wonder...

So much to do, so little time...

WOW! The next month is just jammed packed with Horror goodness...

First up, this Friday,  July 29th, the undead folks at zombieinfo.com will be presenting the excellent Norwegian horror film "Troll Hunter" at the Mayfair. Show starts at 9:15. This movie looks so cool, I'll even forgive the Zombieking for presenting it instead of us! (just kidding Zombieking, just kidding...)

Also this Friday, the Carnival Diablo "Festival of Wonders" starts and runs right through till Sunday night at 10PM. It promises to be a wonderful weekend of the weird, the wild and the whacky. If you haven't seen the Carnival Diablo and Prof. Crookshank, you're in for treat.

On Aug 12th, the Mayfair presents "Herchell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore" - a documentary on the man behind all those great slasher/exploitation films of the 80's.

And finally, Aug. 24th through 28th, it's the one, the only, Festival of Fear. Both Ottawa Horror and Zombieinfo will have a booth there, so if you're going, be sure and stop by.

Good Neighbours - A Review

So as you know, Ottawa Horror presented the Ottawa Premiere of Good Neighbours last night, and being your intrepid reporter I'm here to tell you all about it.

For those that don't know, the movie, directed by Jacob Tierney and starring Scott Speedman and Jay Baruchel, takes place in an apartment complex in Montreal in 1995, as a serial killer stalks the neighbourhood. Newcomer Victor (Baruchel) rents an apartment upstairs from Louise (Emily Hampshire) and Spencer - two neighbours who may or may not be romantically involved - on the eve of the 1995 referendum. As the killings continue, the three enter into a dangerous triangle...

I'll admit I went into this movie with very minimal expectations. First obviously "Canadian" cinema (I mean... c'mon... the REFERENDUM?) tends to well... suck. Secondly, both Baruchel and Speedman aren't exactly known for their acting chops - Sorcerer's Apprentice and Underworld anyone?

To my surprise, the movie actually sucked me in to it's world, and held me there. The movie IS completely Canadian, but in the best way I've ever seen. Think "Canadian" in the same sense that Shallow Grave is "British". I suspect using the Referendum as a backdrop was simply a choice to get Telefilm money, but it's only overt in one scene. It's stylishly shot, and it even turns the infamous Canadian "look" on it's head, and features an amazing soundtrack. The story is NOT what you think it is - at least from the synopses you'll see. Think less slasher and more Shallow Grave. If you're looking for a "horror" film - then you will be disappointed - there's very little gore or scare factor here.

The movie has gotten some flack for the acting, and unquestionably, it is the weak point. Speedman pretty much does his one note thing, and Baruchel is this generations Jeff Goldblum - he always plays that same sort of geeky character. Emily Hampshire plays the quirky cat-loving Louise in a wonderfully uncomfortable way, and Anne-Marie Cadieux gets a major nod as the psychotic neighbour. The characters certainly come off as awkward and nervous at the start of the film, but I suspect that's Tierney's decision to make these characters seem quirky. While the mains don't quite have the chops to pull it off, director Tierney manages to recover after the first 20 minutes, and actually draw us in to the weird world of these characters. I certainly found the acting far less objectionable than in Insidious - better writing certainly is a part of that.

The ending was, for me, my least favourite part. Without giving it away, the ending could really have gone three ways, two of which were "easy" and one of which would have been harder, but much more interesting in the context of the film. For whatever reason the movie took one of the easy endings. It wasn't bad by any means - some may even applaud it - but given the rest of the movie, I would really liked to have seen the "harder" one.

So to sum up... It's NOT a horror film. If you're looking for a slasher film with lots of gore, it's not for you. If you're looking for an easy to follow story that requires no work on the audience's part, it's not for you. But if you're looking for a quirky, stylish and tense drama - especially if you're a fan of Shallow Grave and other's of that ilk- then go see it.

Good Neighbours continues it's run at the Mayfair through Sunday, and also Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Ottawa Filmmaker Brett Kelly returns to Horror.

The prolific Brett Kelly has just announced that he's returning to his roots in Horror with his latest film... My Fair Zombie - a zombie riff on the classic "Pygmallion" story. If you're interested in Auditioning, you can click on the link above, or on the poster to go to the site. Shooting apparently starts this October, and will continue in the Spring. Kelly's last foray into the Zombie realm was the low-budget "zom-com" My Dead Girlfriend, which was arguably his best work to date. Win a signed copy of Nightface.

Our very own Lydia Peever (typicallydia) is doing a signing of her debut novel "Nightface" this Saturday July 16th at Collected Works, and Ottawa Horror is offering two of our readers a chance to win signed copies.

"Nightface represents a return to vicious and violent vampire fiction. He could not remember a thing. Who he was or where he came from. After finding his landlady's mutilated body, where he was going became more important. He has visions of the undead. An a bandoned house of isolated opulence lures him. Then he meets Sinthia - the only person who really recognizes him - and her hundreds of scars. Little did Gunnar know that running to Ottawa put him face to face with his future, let alone his vicious past. None of the puzzle pieces fall into place, until he turns his back on the day." (Amazon)

So here's how it works. We'll take the first two folks who email us at contests@ottawahorror.com with the name of the Publisher of Nightface, and they'll win signed copies of the book. Winners can either pick up the book on Saturday and have a chance to meet the author, or we'll arrange to have them sent by post.
